How To Wash A Latex Foam Pillow - Instructions From The Manufacturer

The benefits of a natural latex pillow are many.  In addition to the amazing comfort and support benefits of natural latex pillows, they are long lasting.  I'm talking many years.  My own personal experience has been 5 years so far, and my latex pillows look and feel like new.  This brings up a common question:  How do I wash my latex pillow?  After all, a pillow that you keep that long is going to get dirty at some point!  Well, I've read a few articles on the internet on how to do this, but not many good ones.  I decided to talk to the manufacturer directly.  Here's what I found out.....

First off, they aren't real keen on people washing their latex pillows.  Seems every sentence started with "If you must....".  That being said, here are the instructions I was given:

1.  DO NOT wash your pillow in a washer, nor dry it in a dryer.

2.  If you must clean the pillow you will want to hand wash (either spot cleaning it or using a cloth to lightly clean it)

3.  To dry it you must air dry it, never put the Latex Bun in a dryer.

4.  You may wash the cover in a delicate cold wash, and air dry so it does not shrink.

5.  Please note, if you do wash the latex foam bun it does void the warranty.

Notice they never mention soaking the latex pillow in warm water with dish soap!  I have read a few articles suggesting you do this.  Spot cleaning seems to work just fine.  I have done this to mine and have had no issues.  My personal recommendation is to use a protective cover on the pillow and just wash that.  They are inexpensive and keep your latex pillows clean!

If you have any comments or questions, please post them in the comments or in the mattress forum at the top of the page.  If any of you have any experience with cleaning your latex pillows, we would love to hear about it.  Thanks!

  1. I've had my latex pillows for 20 yrs & they're still wonderful. I bought them from J C Penneys. I've washed them in the washer twice. They do get smelly after a while.
I make sure I keep them in the zippered covering when I do so. It takes a couple days to dry. Bummer. But they're still in great shape.
I ordered some new ones a few years ago & they're too thick. Thicker than the 20 yr old ones. I'm not sure if the original 20 yr old pair are thinner because of age, or if they were thinner when I bought them.
I usually sleep w/1 under my head & 1 between my knees. I had an accident while sleeping & it stunk so I had 2 wash it.
I'm considering tumbling it in cold air in the dryer so it'll be dry by tonite. But since I absolutely LOVE these pillows, so I don't want to chance ruining it.
Becuz dryer isn't recommended, is it bcuz the heat will mess it up? If so, how would it mess it up.
I would really like to soften up the 2 new ones I bought & was wondering if I washed & put them in the dryer, would it make them softer, or would it melt them?

    1. Hello,
Gather all the cleaning materials and appliances you need to clean your pillow. This would include a vacuum, laundry detergent, water, hose or spray bottle and some hydrogen peroxide. A good alternative for hydrogen peroxide would be vinegar.

      Thanks

  4. I just returned from the Solomon Islands where there were enough seeds , spores and eggs from creatures to force me to put my latex pillow that I had cut in 1/2 ( to reduce the volume ) into a hot dryer . I did not soak it b/c I had it covered the whole time . It is just fine ! It's been 10 min now and I feel that;s long enough. If you have a sunroom or live where it's dry and sunny , that in itself will disinfect it , leaving it out for a couple of days.

    1. Hi! We have a latex pillow that we've had for at least three (probably four) years. I'm really sensitive to the rubber smell (as I have an allergy) and once I washed the funk out, the rubber smell returned. It doesn't seem to bother my husband (whose pillow it actually IS), however, so perhaps it fades enough with regular airing - which you should definitely do with ANY new bedding - to be usable. ^_^
